Wow, a blog post on the Gades Blog, I feel like the Jefferson’s moving on up. I’m Chris Taylor and for those who don’t know, I am the Social Media Intern for the Renegades Pitch for Kids Fund.
On Saturday we held our 6th 3 Point Shot competition alongside the Hospice Foundation and it was my first time to bear witness to the three point styling of Jason Luksis, the three-time defending champion, and let me tell you, seeing is believing. Every time he hit the court, the crowd literally went silent.
Jason put up 40 out of the 58 possible points in his third and final round to take home his fourth straight 3 Point Shot title and the cash prize of $500 dollars! While I went into the event thinking it was going to be a complete blowout and no one coming closing to stripping Jason of his crown, I got nervous for him even though he said he never was. Several shooters topped the 30 point mark early on and Jason was in a tie at 34 and then went down to a contestant that hit 36. . .the reign was almost over, until he hit 40. Even after that, the top shooters from early on kept buying in to get their shot at the man, the myth, the legend, but they all fell short.
Not everyone was there to take out Jason though, people were there just because they wanted to be involved with Pitch for Kids and spend a day out with their family doing something different. Fathers and sons faced off in the contest, siblings cheered on their brothers and sisters, and a guy brought his girlfriend’s son who comes up on the weekends from the Bronx to shoot some hoops.
No one left a loser with tons of prizes be given away, including many pairs on Renegades tickets! Everyone even got a chance to win $200 dollar in oil from Love Effron.
Well there was one loser…me. Out of everyone who participated, young boys, girls, and senior citizen, I had the contest low of 3 points. In the shoot around I felt great, hitting shots from everywhere on the court but it all changes when Zolz says those three words, “Contestant, Ready? GO!” Immediately you think to yourself “Oh no, 75 seconds? I better start throwing these up fast.” I don’t even think I was using my regular shooting motion, my brain and body basically went numb under the pressure. It was pretty bad, but oh well, when was I ever going to get a chance to participate in a 3 Point Shot contest again? Maybe I’ll really test myself at the Jailbreak to Home 5k on May 1st (start registering).
